Overview
What Is a Membrane Switch?
A membrane switch is a low-profile, flexible interface that uses conductive layers separated by a spacer to complete an electrical circuit when pressure is applied. Unlike mechanical switches, membrane switches have no moving parts — making them highly resistant to dust, moisture, and chemical exposure.
The typical construction consists of a graphic overlay (polycarbonate or polyester), an adhesive spacer, a circuit layer with silver or copper conductive traces, and a rear adhesive for mounting. Optional layers include backlighting (LED or EL), EMI shielding, and stiffener plates.
Ensel has manufactured custom membrane switches for over 25 years, serving industries from medical diagnostics to industrial control — each built to the exact specifications of our OEM customers.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order quantity for custom membrane switches?
We work with customers at various volume levels. While higher volumes offer better unit economics, we regularly produce smaller prototype and pilot runs. Contact us to discuss your specific quantity requirements.
How long does it take to manufacture a custom membrane keypad?
Lead times vary by complexity and quantity. Standard production runs typically take 4–6 weeks from approved artwork. Expedited options are available. We maintain a Houston warehouse for faster US delivery.
Can you match our existing design or do you need CAD files?
We can work from CAD files, physical samples, or detailed drawings. Our engineering team handles the translation to production-ready files and will send a DXF and PDF proof before production begins.
What certifications do your membrane switches comply with?
Our manufacturing facility is ISO 9001:2015 certified. We can produce switches designed to meet UL, CE, RoHS, and application-specific standards. Medical-grade builds follow relevant IEC and FDA guidance.
Do you offer ESD protection for industrial applications?
Yes. We offer ESD-safe overlays, shielding layers, and static-dissipative materials for membrane switches used in sensitive electronic environments.
